What Is Your Passion: 3 Questions to Ask Yourself Today

Updated: Sep 7

What is your passion? We can find ourselves getting hung up on this question and obsessing over it, and at the end of the day we always end up back to square one...which is “I have no idea.” Or maybe you find yourself wandering aimlessly through life just waiting for that light bulb moment to go off and something to click to determine what is your passion. Until then you just continue working your 9-5 job awaiting the day your life will change when you finally figure out what is your passion so that you can actually live a lifestyle you love. Figuring out what is your passion can sometimes be the hardest part of starting a business, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are 3 questions to ask yourself to figure out what is your passion: 1: If it was your birthday and you could do anything you wanted, what would you do? This is a question that Bobbi Brown (a successful entrepreneur of a best-selling makeup line) was asked by her mother when she wanted to drop out of college because she wasn’t interested in what she was studying. Her reply? She would go to Bergdorf Goodman and get lost in the makeup department. That is when her mother told her she should drop out of college and enroll in cosmetology school, and the rest is history. I love this story because sometimes it’s just a simple question of “what would you do if you could do anything today” that can lead us to discover and ask ourselves, what is your passion.

We have a tendency to overcomplicate and overthink, and this often leads us to confusion and inaction. We continue to stay stuck in this “I don’t know what I want to do” cycle. So ask yourself right now, if today was your birthday and you could do anything you wanted, what would you do?

2: What are your interests and hobbies? If you would have asked me 7 years ago if I thought my passion for flowers would ever lead me to start a multi-six-figure floral design business, I would probably have scoffed and said, “No, it’s just something I enjoy doing as a hobby.” Fast forward to 2012, I wanted out of my corporate job and the soul-sucking corporate world, so I began my first entrepreneur endeavor in the tobacco industry, as I jokingly called myself a “cigar slinger” and made $10k sales within the first quarter. I eventually decided that if I had the choice to do anything I needed to ask myself, “What is your passion”. Without a doubt it was flowers so I decided that next, I would learn floral design and start a floral business. So that’s what I did. And that’s what you can do too. A lot of times if you think about what you are good at, what you enjoy, or what it is that gives you a sense of purpose, you can find there a unique idea for what you really want to do. 3: What do you value?

What do you believe is worthy, right, and important to be in your life? Do you value freedom, do you want the liberty to travel whenever you want? Do you value creativity? Do you like to take time for yourself and start an art project or home renovation project? Do you value serving, and want to do something that helps others? Make a list of what you value most in life, and then from there go down that list and try to figure out what you want to do in life. Here are some of my values:

  • Financially and morally supporting important causes that involve women and children

  • Showing up for my community from a place of service

  • Being a heart-centered entrepreneur, looking for ways I can give back and help others

  • Alarm free lifestyle

  • The idea that travel and vacations are not reserved for a certain time of year or period of time

  • Guilt-free decisions that enhance my life and those around me

  • Money is a catalyst meant to be shared, not hoarded, as we often are the link between others and their needs and future impact.

  • Time. Having as much of my time as possible as I know I can never get it back.

These values helped me determine that what I really wanted in life was to design a business that gave me a lifestyle I loved. That lifestyle means I have the freedom to travel whenever I want, I am financially secure and not stressed about money, I get to spend my days with my family and enjoy them and not just burnt out evenings where all I want to do is crawl into bed. I get to help other entrepreneurs take their unique business ideas and design a lifestyle that they love around it, so they too, get to live out what they value most. By realizing you have the power to do anything you want (and I mean anything, hello cigar slinger!), being aware of your interests and hobbies while remembering your values, this nagging question of “what is your passion” by now, is already answered.
